While I agree civil disputes may, with consensus, be settled privately, by whatever structure agreed upon, criminal matters need to be handled by by the courts of the land.
That it should be otherwise concerns me.

I totally agree! Society would just collapse if everyone went about with their own laws. If people do not want to live by the laws of the country they are living in, then go back to where they came from. May sound harsh, but its how I feel.
Note to self, must read Diamond Age.
